Plastering Launceston
Describe the plastering job on your older building and your enquiry goes to one local provider, who inspects it and quotes in writing. One question comes before any quote: is the building entered on the Tasmanian Heritage Register? If it is, Heritage Tasmania says the Heritage Council has to approve works before they start. If it is only in a local heritage list, the City of Launceston's planning scheme deals with it instead, because the local code does not apply to a place on the Register.

Before you get a quote
Four things to know first
- The Register comes first Heritage Tasmania says a person must not carry out works to a place entered on the Tasmanian Heritage Register unless the Heritage Council approves them. Whether a building is on the Register is the first question, before any quote.
- A building is under one regime or the other A local heritage code in the planning scheme can protect a place, but the State Planning Office says the code does not apply to a place on the Register. The City of Launceston can say which list an address is on.
- Heritage Tasmania's advice is free Heritage Tasmania encourages people to speak to one of its heritage advisers before lodging anything, and says the advice is free and may save time and money.
- Inside and outside are treated differently The planning scheme treats exterior decoration of a building as development, while internal works are exempt from a planning permit. A building approval may still be needed, and a registered place still needs the Heritage Council.
Three steps
From enquiry to quote
- Tell us about the building Which rooms or walls, what state the plaster is in, and whether you know if the building is on a heritage list.
- It is passed on Your enquiry goes to one independent local provider covering Launceston. The provider pays for the introduction; you never do.
- A provider inspects and quotes The provider looks at the plaster and prices the work in writing. The price is theirs to set.
Plastering across Launceston
Launceston has the State Register and a local list side by side. The City of Launceston says its local heritage list is kept in the Launceston Local Provisions Schedule of the Tasmanian Planning Scheme, and a proposed precinct at Newstead Crescent is before the Tasmanian Planning Commission, with the City recommending that it be approved. This site does not say whether any house is on either list, or in that precinct: the local heritage page and the suburb pages show what each source says and who can say for your address.

Tell us about the building, the rooms or walls and the state of the plaster, and a local provider covering Launceston will call you back. The enquiry goes to an independent qualified provider, who inspects and quotes in writing. The price is the provider's to set, not ours, and we cannot say whether your job needs any heritage approval: Heritage Tasmania and the City can. Before a quote arrives, the Heritage plastering costs and rules check shows the Heritage Tasmania, State Planning Office and City of Launceston lines that can apply to your building, each with its source.
